According to a ministry announcement, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea navy, the Moskva, was being hauled to port when it sank due to “stormy waves.”

The 510-crew warship was a symbol of Russia’s military might, and it was in charge of the country’s naval assault on Ukraine.

Ukraine alleges it fired missiles at the cruiser, but Russia has made no mention of a strike.

The vessel lost its equilibrium while being towed… towards the destination port due to hull damage caused by a fire that broke out after munitions exploded. The ferry sank due to stormy waves, according to the ministry, as reported by state news agency Tass.

Russia had previously stated that there was a fire on board as a result of ammunition exploding.

After Russia’s takeover of Crimea in 2014, the naval threat to Ukraine in the Black Sea escalated, Ukrainian military officials say they targeted the Moskva using a Ukrainian-made Neptune missile.

Earlier in the fight, the Moskva made headlines when it demanded surrender from Ukrainian border forces defending Snake Island in the Black Sea, to which they responded with a memorable radio transmission that loosely translates as “go to hell.”

The missile cruiser was previously deployed by Moscow in the Syrian crisis, providing naval security to Russian forces in the nation.

According to sources, it carries around a dozen Vulcan anti-ship missiles as well as a variety of anti-submarine and mine-torpedo armaments.

Since the invasion began, the Moskva is the second large Russian ship to be badly damaged.
