A Canadian charter airline alleges its pilots and flight attendants are being held inhumanely in the Dominican Republic after reporting 200 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside their plane to authorities.
Punta Cana airport is holding the plane, a Bombardier regional jet that had been operating under the Air Canada Express flag until two years ago.
The contraband was discovered by Pivot Airlines’ staff in a maintenance compartment containing “important” electrical equipment, and the company notified local authorities and the RCMP about the discovery.
The added weight and the combustible goods’ proximity to electrical equipment prevented a possible air disaster, according to the business.
Members of the crew are currently being imprisoned in various detention camps. Accused drug traffickers are sharing a cell with the males, according to a statement from the firm.
“They do not speak the language, have been identified as reporting the contraband to authorities and fear for their safety,” said Pivot. “We are deeply concerned for the safety, security and ethical and humane treatment of our crew.”
“It is unacceptable that a Canadian aircrew could remain detained for the duration of a potential twelve month investigation for a suspected crime that they reported.”
The jet was once owned by a subcontractor that carried 1.5 million people a year on Air Canada Express flights, however that relationship was terminated in late 2019.
