Gibraltar: Hours after Putin’s threat, Britain’s powerful nuclear submarine
HMS Audacious is one of the UK’s newest submarines and is widely regarded as one of the most lethal underwater vehicles in the world. The Astute class submarine is a hunter-killer submarine capable of torpedoing and sinking enemy submarines and surface ships, as well as attacking land targets with its Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The 97-meter-long vessel docked near the USS Georgia on its first visit to The Rock.
Audacious is capable of pinpointing targets up to 1,200 kilometers from the shore.
Additionally, the vessel is capable of manufacturing its own oxygen and freshwater from seawater, allowing it to operate for extended periods of time without needing to refuel.
The vessel’s arrival comes after Putin barred Boris Johnson and many other Cabinet officials from entering Russia.
Russia’s foreign ministry stated in a statement: “In light of the British government’s unprecedented hostile actions, most notably the imposition of sanctions against senior Russian Federation officials, the decision was made to include key members of the British government and a number of political figures on the Russian’stop list.’
“In the near future, this list will be expanded to include British politicians and parliamentarians who contribute to whipping up anti-Russian hysteria.”
Chancellor Rishi Sunik, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, Defence Secretary Ben Wallance, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, Home Secretary Priti Patel, and Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab are all barred from entering Russia under the country’s latest sanctions.
Although the Foreign Office has not yet replied to the ban, a Government spokeswoman has made a statement condemning Russia’s incursion.
