Greece accused of ignoring migrants stranded on border river

A Greek rights organization on Wednesday accused the government of ignoring dozens of asylum seekers, which include numerous children, stranded on the united states of America’s river border with Turkey.

The Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) stated it had asked officers on Monday to rescue 46 people, which include 10 minors, stuck on an islet on the Evros river, however, had but to receive a reply.

In the case of some other organization of 37 people, the Greek government remaining week stated they had been not able to discover them and all touch was in the end misplaced, the GCR stated.

The organization said that it had alerted authorities to rescue at least 230 asylum seekers from Syria, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Iraq in the Evros area this year.

In some cases, the authorities never responded, it said.

And in at least three cases, GCR said it had information that asylum seekers from Turkey and Syria had been sent back to Turkey without being given a chance to apply for protection.

Greece has consistently denied that its security forces engage in illegal pushbacks.

Greece’s national transparency authority in March said a four-month investigation initiated in November had found no evidence of such practices.

On Sunday, a female migrant was found dead after a shooting erupted while she and others tried to cross the Evros into Greece.

Greece is regularly a country of a  desire for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East as they are trying to reach a higher existence inside the European Union.

After big numbers of migrants tried to cross the border from Turkey in March 2020, Greece bolstered patrols and set up cameras, radar, and a forty-kilometer (25-mile) metal fence over 5 meters (sixteen ft) high in the region.
