The Greek coastguard reported on Tuesday that a Russian oil tanker has been impounded off the coast of Evia as part of European Union sanctions against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.

The EU banned Russian-flagged ships from EU ports earlier this month, with limited exceptions, as part of new sweeping sanctions against Russia for what the Kremlin calls a “special military operation.”

The 115,500-deadweight-tonnage Russian-flagged Pegas was taken in Karystos on the southern coast of Evia, just off the Greek mainland near Athens, with 19 Russian crew men on board.

On Twitter, the Russian embassy in Athens, Greece’s capital, said it was investigating the case and in contact with Greek authorities.

A Greek maritime ministry spokesperson said, “It was seized as part of EU sanctions.”

The ship’s oil cargo, according to a coastguard official, was not seized. The cargo’s charterer was unknown, although the vessel was operated by Transmorflot, a Russian company. Transmorflot did not respond to a request for comment right away.
