Ivanka Trump will testify on the US Capitol riots as the investigation focuses on her father’s inner circle
Ms Trump, a former top White House advisor, will appear before the committee remotely to discuss the events of January 6, 2021, which were connected to seven fatalities in a bipartisan Senate investigation. Her testimony on Tuesday will follow that of Jared Kushner, her husband and fellow former presidential advisor, who talked to the panel for more than six hours last week, as the inquiry into the attack on the US Capitol extends to encompass close relatives of the deposed president.
The chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, has previously written to Ms Trump, requesting her voluntary cooperation “on a range of critical topics,” including conversations her father had with his vice president, Mike Pence, on January 6, and why quicker action wasn’t taken on the day to help stop the violence.
Ms Trump’s willingness to cooperate is important for the committee after attempts to get an interview with her since late January.
The panel has conducted 800 interviews, but this is one of the most notable.
The disturbances, which saw supporters of the former president disrupt the electoral college count and attempt to block the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election, were the deadliest attack on the Capitol in more than 200 years.
Mr. Trump was impeached for encouraging an insurgency, but he was acquitted because not enough Republican senators spoke out against him.
His daughter, a valued assistant, is now likely to testify before public hearings, which are set to begin this summer. Her testimony, like those of others before the committee, will be kept confidential.
Legislators have spent much of their time focusing on Mr. Trump’s activities in the White House while his supporters stormed the Capitol. Ms Trump spent much of the day with her father, and Mr Thompson has stated that additional witness evidence places her in the Oval Office at times on January 6 as well as in the days preceding the events.
The investigating panel has stated that they want to talk about what Ms Trump knew about her father’s efforts, including a phone call in which he allegedly pressured Mr Pence to reject the election results, which they claim she witnessed, as well as concerns she may have heard from Mr Pence’s staff, members of Congress, and the White House counsel’s office.
