Since the Russian invasion began on Feb. 24, Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko told the Associated Press that more than 10,000 citizens have died in the southern city.

According to Boychenko, bodies were “carpeted through the streets of our city” and the death toll might be in the tens of thousands.

The figures could not be verified independently.

Boychenko’s remarks come only hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that “tens of thousands” of Ukrainians were slaughtered in Mariupol.
