President Joe Biden said it “feels like the good old days” as he welcomed former President Barack Obama back to the White House to promote the Affordable Care Act, which the White House and Democrats need need before the November elections.
‘My name is Joe Biden, and I’m Vice President Barack Obama,’ the president stated. ‘Welcome back to the White House, man,’ says the narrator. It brings back memories of the good old days.’
Both men joked about their time together during Obama’s presidency during the event, which was a love fest for the Obama years. They hugged, joked, and laughed as the Democrats yelled and clapped from the East Room, which was packed to the rafters.
Obama began his address by joking that he was joined by ‘Vice President Biden,’ and that’some adjustments have been made’ in the five years since he departed, such as all Secret Service personnel being ‘forced to wear aviators,’ and the mansion having a ‘cat wandering about it.’ He even made a joke about wearing a tie for the day.
‘Thank you very much. Vice President Joe Biden is a Democrat. To considerable laughter and applause, Obama remarked, “Vice President – that was a joke.”
‘That was all set up,’ he said one again. Joe Biden, my president.’
He also made fun of Joe’s ice cream addiction, claiming that the Navy mess had been replaced with a ‘Baskin-Robbins.’
Secret Service agents now have to wear aviator glasses, the Navy Mess has been replaced by a Baskin-Robbins, and there’s a cat wandering about, all of which I’m sure would make Bo and Sunny extremely upset,’ he added.
However, Obama lauded and supported his landmark healthcare bill, which Republicans have sought to dismantle several times.
‘Most importantly, returning here allows me to express my gratitude and spend time with an exceptional friend and partner who has been at my side for the past eight years,’ Obama added.
On a more serious note, he recalled how difficult it was to enact the Affordable Care Act (ACA), chastised the media for spreading false information, and said that families continue to overpay for healthcare.
We weren’t able to get everything we desired. That wasn’t an excuse not to go ahead and do it. To use a famous American, if you can provide millions of people health care and greater protection, it’s a fairly big… deal,’ he continued, referring to Biden’s comment that enacting the ACA was a ‘huge f***ing deal.’
However, he agreed that the fact that the website was down when the bill was eventually passed by Congress in 2010 didn’t help matters.
‘Let’s face it, the fact that the ACA website was down when we originally launched it didn’t help.’ Obama stated, “That was not one of my happiest moments.”
Biden, too, made light of his controversial remark during the bill signing, reminding Obama that ‘it’s a hot mic.’
Obama returned to the White House for the first time since welcoming President-elect Donald Trump to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on January 20, 2017.
‘It’s great to be back in the Oval Office.’ ‘It’s been a long time,’ he admitted.
The White House reunion was timed to coincide with the 12th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act’s implementation, but Obama is returning to the Democratic stage at a time when Biden’s approval ratings are in the low 40s, which Democrats fear will hurt them in November when they try to reclaim control of Congress.
Despite residing only a few miles from the White House, the two men, who were notoriously close as president and vice president, have seldom seen each other since Obama left office.
They did have lunch before the event on Tuesday, which was moved from the Rose Garden to the East Room of the White House owing to bad weather in Washington. During Obama’s presidency, the two men held weekly lunch dates.
During his address, Biden quipped, “We just had lunch together and we weren’t sure who was supposed to seat there.”
At Monday’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki remarked, “They are true friends, not just Washington pals.” Psaki served in both Democratic and Republican governments.
‘It’s worth noting that they continue to speak on a regular basis,’ Psaki noted.
Despite the combined appearance, the outcome of the 2022 election remains to be seen. The party in power in the White House has a history of losing midterm elections, and Obama was no exception. In 2010, Obama publicly claimed that his party had been shellacked when Republicans gained 40 House seats after the Democratic-controlled House enacted his healthcare legislation.
