Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer became the first leader from a European Union country to visit Moscow during Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine on Monday, conducting a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that he described as “extremely clear, open, and tough.”
Nehammer’s travel to Moscow follows a trip to Kyiv on Saturday, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Nehammer’s main message to Putin, according to a statement released by his office after the meeting, was “that this war ought to end, because in combat both sides can only lose.”
The Austrian leader emphasised that his Monday visit was “not a nice visit,” but rather his “obligation” to exhaust all options for resolving Ukraine’s turmoil.
According to Source, Austria imports 80% of its natural gas from Russia. Austria is a member of the European Union and has endorsed the bloc’s sanctions against Russia, though it has so far refused to shut off Russian gas deliveries.
