Russia has once again demonstrated its willingness to use gas supplies as a blackmail tool, demonstrating its unreliability as an energy supplier.

According to a statement published by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in response to Gazprom’s announcement that gas delivery to some EU Member States might be disrupted.

“Gazprom’s announcement that it will unilaterally stop delivering gas to European consumers is yet another attempt by Russia to use gas as a kind of blackmail. This is inexcusable and unjustified. And it demonstrates Russia’s unreliability as a gas provider once more. This is a circumstance for which we are prepared. The statement reads, “We are in close contact with all Member States.”

The European Commission has been working “to ensure alternate deliveries and the best possible storage levels across the EU,” according to Von der Leyen.

In this situation, Member States have set in place contingency plans for exactly such a scenario, and they have worked with them “in collaboration and unity.”

The gas coordination group will convene on April 27, according to the statement, and the participants will draw out a coordinated EU reaction.
