COLOMBO, April 7 (Xinhua) — A Sri Lankan court on Thursday issued an order preventing recently resigned central bank governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal from leaving the country until April 18 as the South Asian country is currently faced with an economic crisis.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala made this order according to a request made by a former Southern Province governor through a private plaint filed under the Code of Criminal Procedure Act.

The court also issued a notice ordering the former central bank governor to appear in court on April 18.

Cabraal was appointed as the central bank governor in September last year and resigned from his position early this week following the resignation en masse of cabinet ministers.

He has been under criticism partly for his reluctance to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as lacking foreign currencies led to fuel shortages and hours-long power cuts in the country.
