Last month, explosive relics of Syria’s war killed nearly 30 people, including more than a dozen children, according to a war monitoring group.
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says, “29 people, including 12 children, killed in March from explosive remnants,” with another 29 injured.
According to the monitor, who relies on a large network of sources within Syria, the new death toll takes the total number of persons killed by explosive remnants to 73 since the beginning of the year.
Thousands of people have been injured and hundreds have been murdered as a result of explosives put in fields, along highways, and even in buildings by both sides in Syria’s decade-long conflict.
The United Nations says, one out of every three towns in the nation is estimated to be polluted by explosive ordnance.
The Landmine Monitor shows, Syria surpassed Afghanistan as the nation with the most documented landmine and explosive remnants of war casualties in 2020, with 2,729 individuals killed or injured.
According to the Observatory, 241 civilians were killed and 128 were injured by explosive remnants in Syria in 2021.
Syria’s civil war is believed to have killed around 500,000 people and displaced millions since it began in 2011 with a harsh assault on anti-government rallies.
