The death toll from Tropical Storm Megi’s landslides and flooding has increased to 167, with 110 still missing, according to the government on Saturday.
A total of 164 people lost their lives in the central Philippines, while three people perished in the southern Philippines, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. At least 110 additional people are still unaccounted for in the central Philippines, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
After dumping rain on the central and southern regions of the Philippines for several days prior to and after its landfall on April 10, Megi triggered flash floods and landslides in a number of Baybay City and Leyte Province communities.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte made a surprise visit to the region on Friday and distributed aid to the victims. He flew over the mudslide-devastated towns to get a bird’s-eye view.
Because it lies in the path of most typhoons that hit the Philippines, the central region of the country is frequently the point of entry for these storms.
During the rainy season, landslides and flash floods are widespread in the Philippines, especially when typhoons make landfall.
