
The UK government has planned to privatize Channel 4.
CEO of Channel 4, Alex Mahon sent email to their by saying that the channel has been informed by government that it will proceed with the proposal made last year, ‘quoted by some sources’.
Some reports says, This Channel has a proposed vision of privatization and its sell will be made more than £1B ($1.3B).
After that suggestion was made in first by former UK culture secretary John Whiittingdale last year and then was taken up by incumbent Nadine Dories, though that decision was later postpone on at least two events.
This move will revolutionize the UK broadcasting sector and it will be most goodly change to Channel 4 in 40 year history, as it becomes a privately owned broadcaster.
Channel’s quirky financing model sees it making money from sources like advertising and digital, reinvested in programming instead of returning to shareholders.
Such as, a sale has been strength opposed by the UK’s production community, many of them are reliant on Channel 4’s publisher-broadcaster model. And this essentially allows producers to keep the rights to shows they make.
As the government is looking to allow Channel to make and sell its own shows as well as expand Channel internationally and have more access to capital.
Previously some companies connected the purchase of Channel 4 which include ITV, Sky and Discovery.
The spokesperson said “With over 60,000 submissions to the government’s public consultation, it is disappointing that today’s announcement has been made without formally recognizing the significant public interest concerns which have been raised, Channel 4 has engaged in good faith with the government throughout the consultation process, demonstrating how it can continue to commission much-loved programs from the independent sector across the UK that represent and celebrate every aspect of British life as well as increase its contribution to society; while maintaining ownership by the public.”
Spokesperson concluded by adding, “The proposal to privatize Channel 4 will require a lengthy legislative process and political debate. We will of course continue to engage with DCMS, government and Parliament and do everything we can to ensure that Channel 4 continues to play its unique part in Britain’s creative ecology and national life.”
