BRITS will experience a -8C ‘polar plunge’ tomorrow as an ice storm brings an April cold spell.

The Met Office predicts that up to 2 inches of rain might fall tonight, with temperatures dropping as low as -8 degrees Celsius.

It might potentially cause traffic gridlock on highways and trains during rush hour.

Sarah Kent, a Met Office forecaster, stated: “Snow is expected to fall across a large region, mostly along the east coast, including Northumberland, the North York Moors, and the Pennines.

“Another band of snow will fall across Kent and Essex, and temperatures will be low enough for it to settle.”

“It’s not uncommon to have snow around Easter time,” she continued.

However, it is more of a shock to the system due to the abnormally high 20C temperatures we saw this time last week.”

They issued two yellow snow and ice warnings for the north east, Lincolnshire, East Anglia, Essex, and Kent.

‘COLD AIR IS COMING’

Until at least Sunday, the temperature will be below the 12C normal for this time of year.

The wind chill effect will make it seem colder in particularly exposed coastal places.

However, by Monday, the snow will have given way to warmer weather – and the coming of April showers.

“The cold air is coming from way up near the North Pole, so it’s as cold as it can get,” Donal Considine of the BBC’s forecaster DTN MeteoGroup said.

“It will undoubtedly be extremely chilly for London, with -2C anticipated at Heathrow on Friday morning and Friday night, -4C distant from the capital, and -10C in Scotland’s Highland glens on Friday morning.”

“Sub-zero temperatures are probable for much of the UK, with -8C possible in the north of Scotland,” according to a Met Office forecaster.

Londoners were among those affected by snow today as the Arctic blast swept over the United Kingdom.

The bone-chilling plummet saw temperatures drop below freezing first thing in the morning, with thick flakes of snow reported around the city.

A yellow ice weather warning is presently in effect across most of eastern Britain and is expected to stay until 10 a.m. tomorrow.

“Snow and hail storms might lead to slippery conditions, potentially disrupting traffic,” forecasts say.

It comes as the temperature is predicted to drop even lower overnight, with lows of -7C expected.

Met Office forecaster Matthew Box told The Sun Online: “We’ve got a cold air mass across the UK from the north. “Behind it are showers and they’re bringing a mix of rain sleet and snow mainly to the east of the UK. “This morning in particular we’ve got temperatures at or below zero in many places.”
