The besieged port city of Mariupol to surrender has passed, as Moscow moves closer to complete control of the city, which would be Moscow’s biggest capture since its February invasion of Ukraine.

For weeks, the city has been facing a humanitarian disaster as Russian tanks marched towards the city centre, razing neighborhoods in the process. It is unknown how many civilians were killed during the siege. Russian forces are accused of gathering bodies and incinerating them in a mobile incinerator, according to a Ukrainian-controlled council.

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, called the situation in the city as “inhuman” on Saturday night, accusing Russia of “deliberately trying to destroy everyone” there.

He said Ukrainian troops controlled only a small area of Mariupol and faced significantly bigger Russian numbers, possibly implying that Russia was close to capturing the city.
