St. George’s Day has gained popularity in recent years. But we don’t get a day off because St. George’s Day isn’t an English public holiday.
The idea of making St. George’s Day a bank holiday is gaining public support, but the government has yet to sign on. So why not make St. George’s Day a bank holiday?
St. George’s Day is usually on April 23rd. This is believed to be St George’s death date in 303 AD.
However, Church of England rules state that no saints’ days should fall between Palm Sunday and the Sunday after Easter, so it can be pushed back.
In England, St. George’s Day is not a bank holiday, despite growing calls for it to be. St Andrew’s Day in Scotland and St Patrick’s Day in Ireland are both bank holidays, but St David’s Day in Wales is not.
Businesses, schools, and government offices must be open on April 23rd.
From 1415 until the 18th century, England celebrated St. George’s Day as a national holiday.
Its importance waned after the Act of Union of 1707 joined England and Scotland (Wales had been conquered in the 13th century).
Since then, St. George’s Day has not been a public holiday. However, polls show that making St. George’s Day a bank holiday would be widely supported in England.
