On Monday, protesters showered Russia’s envoy to Poland in a crimson substance as he went to lay flowers at the Soviet Military Cemetery in Warsaw to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the triumph over Nazi Germany.
The conflict in Ukraine has placed a pall over this year’s Victory Day, when Moscow commemorates the 27 million Soviet people who died in WWII. Poland, a staunch supporter of Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion, has spoken out against any large-scale commemoration.
The demonstrators surrounded the Russian delegation and chanted “fascists” before Ambassador Sergey Andreev was sprayed in the red material, according to video footage uploaded on Twitter.
According to the TASS news agency, Andreev told reporters that he and his colleagues were not critically injured in the event.
He stated, “We will file a formal protest.” “We met them halfway when they suggested we not organize a larger celebration, and we didn’t escalate the situation.”
