After the nation’s bloodiest school shooting in a decade, President Joe Biden tried to console relatives in the south Texas town of Uvalde on Sunday, as federal officials indicated they will investigate local law enforcement’s delayed response to the incident.
The decision by Uvalde police to allow the gunman to remain in a classroom for nearly an hour as policemen waited in the hallway and children inside made frightened 911 calls for aid has sparked outrage.
The president and first lady Jill Biden wiped away emotions as they laid white roses and paid tribute to temporary shrines to the deceased at Robb Elementary School, where the gunman massacred 19 students and two teachers.
As Biden walked out of Sacred Heart Catholic Church after service, a mob chanted, “Do something.”
He said, “We will.”
For several hours, the Bidens visited privately with victims’ families and survivors before meeting with first responders behind closed doors.
“We are heartbroken for you. We are praying for you. We are here to support you. And we’re determined to transform this suffering into action “Before leaving, Biden sent a tweet in the early evening.
According to police, the gunman, Salvador Ramos, entered the school with an AR-15 semi-automatic weapon on Tuesday after shooting his grandmother, who survived.
Official descriptions of how police handled the shooting have been contradictory. At the request of Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, the US Department of Justice said on Sunday that it would investigate the local law enforcement response.
