Former US President George W Bush condemned the “wholly unjustifiable and cruel invasion of Iraq,” In a blunder during an address in the US state of Texas.
During his speech in Dallas on Wednesday, the former president, who ordered the 2003 war of Iraq on the erroneous premise that the country was producing weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), intended to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The outcome is an absence of checks and balances in Russia, and the choice of one man to conduct an utterly unnecessary and savage war of Iraq,” he stated, criticizing Russia’s democratic structure.
“I mean, of Ukraine,” he hastily clarified.
The crowd erupted in amusement as he added, “Iraq too.”
Several studies have revealed how the Bush administration relied on poor intelligence while misleading the public in the run-up to the war, with activists demanding that Bush and other leaders be held accountable for what has been termed an illegal invasion for years.
The blunder was dubbed the “Freudian slip of the century” by Andrew Stroehlein, Human Rights Watch’s European communications director.
“Wow – the one time Bush revealed the truth regarding the invasion of #Iraq,” said Pouya Alimagham, a modern Middle East historian from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The US invasion of Iraq, which ended in 2011, has been blamed directly for the establishment of the ISIL (ISIS) armed group in the country.
Maris Kabas twweted, “If I could tell my 17-year-old self one thing it’s that George W Bush will admit to unjustly invading Iraq in 17 years.”
