Afghanistan has been dealing with an extreme food crisis, with over 22 million people, or more than half of the country’s population, suffering from severe hunger and the majority unable to predict when their next meal would arrive, the United Nations said.
According to a report in Khaama Press, more than 97 percent of Afghans are afflicted by food shortages, the UN said.
This is a significant rise from September 2020, when over 14 million people faced famine.
Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August last year, living costs and food prices have risen. According to the Afghan daily article, revenues are expected to have plummeted by approximately a third since the Taliban’s takeover of power.
According to Khaama Press, the United Nations World Food Programme in Afghanistan offered money and food relief to 376,139 persons in Kabul in March 2022, with the most recent data for those supported during Eid still being recorded.
According to analysts, Eid-Ul-Fitr was just another day of suffering for ordinary Afghans while Muslims throughout the world celebrated the festival.
