Iranian police captured a foreign ship attempting to smuggle petroleum out of the country on Wednesday, according to the state news agency IRNA.
Iran, which has some of the world’s lowest fuel costs due to substantial subsidies and the depreciation of its national currency, has been combatting extensive petroleum smuggling by land and sea to Gulf Arab governments.
The ship was detained on Gulf seas and transported to a seaport in the southern province of Hormozgan, where it was turned over to legal authorities for examination, according to the agency.
“We were able to identify and detain a ship carrying smuggled fuel intended to transport large-scale smuggled fuel shipments east of Maru Island,” chief of provincial border guards Hossein Dehaki said.
Several ships in recent months have been detained for smuggling fuel in the Gulf by Iranian authorities.
