Jordan’s army said it killed four persons who were attempting to bring “huge volumes” of drugs into the nation from Syria.
According to a Jordanian Armed Forces source, forces on Jordan’s eastern border with Syria opened fire on persons attempting to enter the country, killing four and wounding another.
According to the source, the infiltrators were forced to retire into Syrian territory.
“After inspecting the area, 181 palm-sized sheets of hashish, 637,000 Captagon narcotic pills, and 39,600 tramadol pills were found and handed over to the concerned authorities,” the source told the media.
Six individuals were injured in the operation, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights in London, with some of them in severe condition.
According to the report, one of those slain by the Jordanian army was the boss of a narcotics-trafficking organization in southern Syria with “strong” links to Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah.
The operation on Sunday was the latest after Jordan launched a crackdown on drug smuggling from Syria, as well as a modification in engagement regulations, to combat what it called a “dramatic surge” in drug trafficking from its neighbor.
Jordan has warned that Syria is on the verge of becoming a narco-state, posing cross-border hazards to Jordan, the region, and the rest of the globe.
The JAF has recently said that a total of 361 smuggling attempts from Syria were foiled in 2021, leading to the seizure of about 15.5 million pills of narcotics of different types.
It foiled more than 130 smuggling attempts from Syria in 2020 and seized about 132 million Captagon pills and more than 15,000 sheets of hashish.
