On Friday, a rare tornado ripped through the small northern Michigan town of Gaylord, killing at least two people and wounding more than 40 others as it overturned cars, tore off roofs, and caused extensive devastation.
The tornado was verified to be traveling over northern Michigan on Friday afternoon at about 3:40 p.m. It took around 15 minutes to traverse, wreaking carnage in its wake. At least one significant structure was demolished, and numerous automobiles were overturned and destroyed. Also badly destroyed was a mobile trailer park.
Gaylord, a town of 4,200 inhabitants about 230 miles (370 kilometers) northwest of Detroit, was hit by the tornado.
The twister was classified as an EF3 tornado by the National Weather Service on Saturday, with “maximum winds of 140 mph.”
In Gaylord, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a state of emergency, enabling more resources to be allocated to the recovery effort. According to MLive.com, Whitmer remarked Friday evening, “My heart goes out to the families and small businesses impacted by the tornado and terrible weather in Gaylord.”
According to the story, she said, “I have declared a state of emergency for Otsego County to expedite resources to the impacted communities, and the State Emergency Operations Center has been activated to coordinate our state’s response.” “Michigan residents are tenacious. We are tenacious. We will reconstruct in every way necessary. There’s no obstacle we can’t overcome together “Later that evening, Whitmer tweeted.
Eddie Thrasher, 55, claimed the twister appeared above him when he was sitting in his car outside an auto parts business. Thrasher stated, “There are roofs torn off companies, a stretch of industrial-type facilities.” “The RVs were tipped over and destroyed. A large number of rescue vehicles were moving east of town.”
He said that he dashed into the store to wait it out. Thrasher stated, “My adrenaline was going insane.” “It was over in less than five minutes.” Multiple homes, trees, and electricity lines were falling and impeding highways, according to State Police on Twitter. Multiple RVs were torn to shreds in a parking lot, according to images shared on social media.
“The MSP advises Michiganders to stay away from the Gaylord region,” Whitmer stated. “Emergency teams are on the scene to assist homeowners and assess the damage.” Throughout Northern Michigan, severe thunderstorm watches and warnings are still in force. Our sympathies are with the people in the affected areas, as well as the first responders and utility personnel who are working tirelessly to keep everyone safe.”
The Governor also expressed her condolences on Twitter to the families and businesses affected by the tornado.
“To the whole Gaylord community,” she continued, “Michigan is with you.” “We will reconstruct in every way necessary.”
The City of Gaylord has set a 7:00 p.m. curfew on Friday, which will be removed at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, according to the Michigan State Police.
