An 18-year-old white guy shot and killed ten people in a black neighborhood in New York state.
Officials call it a racially motivated crime.
The suspect, Payton Gendron, was apprehended following a standoff at the location, a supermarket in Buffalo, according to court documents.
He opened fire in the parking lot of the store before entering and continuing his rampage while live-streaming the attack.
President Joe Biden of the United States condemned the “abhorrent” act.
“We are investigating this incident as both a hate crime and a case of racially-motivated violent extremism,” said Stephen Belongia, from the FBI’s Buffalo office.
He said that there was evidence of “racial animosity.”
“He exited his vehicle. He was very heavily armed. He had tactical gear. He had a tactical helmet on. He had a camera that he was live-streaming what he was doing,” Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia told.
During the shooting, the attacker yelled racist obscenities and claimed that a racial slur was scrawled on his weapon.
He also appears to have published a manifesto on the internet that contained racist language and views.
The guy is thought to have travelled 200 kilometers to get to the city’s primarily black neighborhood.
There were a total of thirteen persons shot, with the bulk of the casualties being black.
Gramaglia claimed that after a lengthy standoff, the suspect relinquished his firearm and was apprehended.
He was charged with first-degree murder later in court.
The three injured victims, all of whom worked at the supermarket, were not seriously hurt.
The officials say that a retired police officer acting as a security guard attempted to shoot the culprit but was murdered in the process.
“This is the worst nightmare that any community can face and we are hurting, we are seething right now,” Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told.
He added, “We cannot let this hateful person divide our community or our country.”
