Police in Birmingham raid an unregistered school
Birmingham: Officers stormed the facility on Tuesday and were spotted collecting bags of evidence, including computers. It came after Ofsted inspectors uncovered a locked room containing a bed and medical equipment at the school, which has not been named.
According to a West Midlands Police spokesman, Ofsted inspectors investigating accusations of an unregistered school called the force at 11:39 a.m. on Tuesday.
“There were concerns raised about possible illegal practices that may have occurred at the premises,” she said.
“As part of our investigation, two men, aged 32 and 61, were arrested on suspicion of female genital mutilation and have since been released on strict bail.”
According to her, a third man was arrested as part of the inquiry on Wednesday. He was also granted bail under tight terms.
“We understand the concern this will cause in the community, but it’s important to stress that we’re still working to determine whether any offenses have occurred,” the spokeswoman said. Our investigation, in collaboration with partner agencies, is still ongoing.”
Unregistered schools are private or independent schools that are not registered with the Department of Education (DfE).
It is illegal to run an independent school unless it is registered with the Department of Education, the regulating authority for that sort of institution.
Anyone who runs an unlicensed school is charged with a felony punishable by up to six months in prison, an infinite fine, or both.
According to а report released in November, since founding its Unregistered School’s Tаskforce in 2016, Ofsted inspectors have investigated over 800 schools, issuing over 100 warning warnings to their owners and managers.
