Negotiations with Hungary on a planned EU ban on Russian fossil fuel imports made headway, but more work is required, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

She arrived in Budapest this afternoon, as previously reported. “This evening’s talk with PM Viktor Orban was useful in clarifying problems connected to sanctions and energy security,” she has now tweeted.

Von der Leyen also stated that a video conference with other countries in the region would be held.

A number of EU member states, especially Hungary, which relies heavily on Russian energy, have expressed reservations over the EU’s sixth package of sanctions.
