MOSCOW: Russia warned on Thursday that it would have to take “military-technical” measures in reaction to Finland’s decision to join NATO, after Helsinki’s authorities endorsed the US-led alliance.

“The expansion of NATO and the approach of the alliance to our borders does not make the world and our continent more stable and secure,” Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, told reporters.

Peskov said affirmatively when asked if Finland’s inclusion would pose a danger.

“Everything will depend on how this process takes place, how far the military infrastructure will move towards our borders,” he stated.

Moscow will be “forced to take reciprocal steps, military-technical and other, to address the resulting threats to its national security,” according to Russia’s foreign ministry.

According to the report, NATO is accused of attempting to build “another front for the military danger to our country.”

The foreign ministry stated, “Helsinki should be aware of its responsibility and the consequences of such a move.”

Finland’s president and prime minister announced earlier on Thursday that they support NATO membership and that a formal decision will be made this weekend.
