As the European Union tries to punish Moscow with oil sanctions, Russian soldiers have started a significant attack on the Azovstal steel complex in the ruined port city of Mariupol, as well as hammering targets across eastern Ukraine.

Three months into the battle, Moscow has refocused its effort on Ukraine’s east and south, while Western allies continue to give cash and weaponry to Kyiv in an attempt to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to retreat.

Local officials said that 21 people were murdered and another 28 were injured in one of a series of assaults in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region on Tuesday.

Regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said 10 of the 21 people killed were slain in shelling of the Avdiivka coke plant, one of Europe’s largest, calling it the greatest daily death toll since a Russian attack on a railway station in Kramatorsk almost a month ago.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksky announced that more than 150 individuals had been successfully evacuated from Mariupol.

“Today, 156 people arrived in (the Ukrainian-held city of) Zaporizhzhia. Women and children. They have been in shelters for more than two months, ” In a daily speech, Zelensky stated

A Mariupol municipal adviser warned that more evacuations from the city will take place on Wednesday with the assistance of the UN and the Red Cross.

However, UN humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, Osnat Lubrani, has cautioned that “there may be more civilians who remain trapped” in the Azovstal steelworks’ vast subterranean passageways.

As Russia’s fresh campaign in eastern Ukraine continued, EU officials gave member states a draught blueprint for a new round of sanctions directed at Moscow on Tuesday.

But there are differences, according to many EU officials and European diplomats in Brussels, with at least one member state jockeying to opt out of an oil embargo.

The idea will be reviewed by ambassadors from the 27 European Union countries on Wednesday, and it will require unanimous agreement before entering into force.
