Streaming services hit with tax to support local TV

Global TV streaming firms such as Netflix, Amazon, and Disney have agreed to pay a fee of 6% of their earnings in Denmark to support local television production.

Following the tremendous surge in popularity of streaming services, governments across Europe are attempting to secure support for local TV and film creation.

“Denmark must go as far as possible in delivering good public service to children and young people,” the Ministry of Culture said in a statement on Saturday.

It went on to say that the fragmented media landscape created by the advent of global streaming services “may pose a threat to our country’s cohesion and democratic discussion.”

Switzerland and Portugal have taken similar steps, and Spain is expected to follow suit.

Several productions have already been done in Denmark by US streaming platforms. Netflix has collaborated with Danish broadcaster DR on the fourth season of “Borgen,” which premiered this year.
