US says reviving Iran deal ‘far from certain’ despite EU mission

After the European Union delivered a positive evaluation of a trip to Tehran, the US acknowledged it remained doubtful if a nuclear deal with Iran can be restored.

“That said, a settlement remains far from certain at this moment,” a State Department official said in response to envoy Enrique Mora’s visit.

“Iran must decide if it wants to impose further restrictions or conclude a deal fast, which we believe would benefit all parties,” the official said.

Following Mora’s visit, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told reporters in Germany that delayed negotiations with Iran have been “reopened.”

President Joe Biden supports resuming the agreement that his predecessor Donald Trump had scrapped, but he has rejected a number of Iranian demands, including the removal of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards from a US terrorism blacklist.
