A boat sinks in the Mediterranean, leaving 22 migrants missing and a pregnant lady dead
After their little rubber boat sank in the Mediterranean Sea, authorities said that a pregnant lady died and that at least 22 other migrants are still missing.
According to the international humanitarian organisation Doctors Without Borders, seventy-one people were saved on Monday as they battled for their lives in the water off the coastlines of Italy and Malta.
The head of the group’s search and rescue squad, Riccardo Gatti, declared in a statement, “What we faced yesterday was our worst fear.” “We realised how difficult this rescue would be when we approached the boat in trouble and could see it with our binoculars. Dozens of people were trapped on the sinking boat, and many more were already in the sea.
The pregnant woman was revived by rescue personnel, but they were unsuccessful. A 4-month-old infant and three additional migrants needed medical attention. The woman and child were later flown to Malta, according to Doctors Without Borders.
Another woman claimed that her younger brother also perished at sea, and two other mothers told rescuers that they had also lost children at sea. According to the group, survivors also claimed that up to 12 further persons may still be missing.
According to Stephanie Hofstetter, the medical team leader on board the Geo Barents search and rescue vessel, “The survivors are fatigued.” A number of people had hypothermia after spending many hours in the water, and many others absorbed enormous volumes of seawater.
According to Doctors Without Borders, at least 10 refugees sustained moderate to severe gasoline burns and needed extra care.
The organisation claimed that the occurrence is a “deadly consequence” of the growing passivity and disengagement of European countries, notably Italy and Malta, toward migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.
Doctors Without Borders search and rescuer Juan Matias Gil said in a statement that “troubles at sea continue to cost thousands of lives, and these people are being lost on Europe’s doorstep amid absolute silence and apathy on the side of [European Union] nations.”
According to Doctors Without Borders, the Mediterranean Sea has been home to 721 unaccounted-for migrants only this year alone, making it the world’s “deadliest border.” Since 2014, a total of 24,184 migrants have gone missing there.
One Cameroonian man claimed to have spent 19 hours at sea before being saved.
He stated, “All these hours, I observed numerous people drowning.” “I am relieved to have been saved, although it comes with many tears,”
According to Doctors Without Borders, images shared on Twitter show scores of refugees fighting for survival while “severely terrified and startled.”
