A dog that went lost during a sled race across Alaska was discovered nearly three months later.

On March 13, Leon escaped from a checkpoint nearly 150 miles into the famous 938-mile Iditarod race, despite the organizers’ and team handler Sebastian Dos Santos Borges’ best efforts.

The Iditarod said on Facebook at the time that they were “heartbroken” about Leon’s disappearance from the returned dog area at the Ruby checkpoint on March 13.

Leon was reunited with his owner, Sebastian Dos Santos Borges.

Sebastian came in McGrath to reconnect with Leon after the dog was caught, and they both flew back to France from the major city of Anchorage.

The Iditarod verified the tragedy on social media, writing that they couldn’t thank the Iditarod Nation enough for their support, prayers, thoughts, and good wishes for Leon.

‘Alaska is an incredibly special place, as is the spirit of the community, which is part of what makes The Last Great Race so special, from the volunteers to the search fund organizers and individual donors, community members along the trail and the heroes of McGrath who have helped towards the cause of finding Leon.’ Iditarod Nation, thank you, and Leon, welcome home!’

On the day after the disappearance, Sebastian had to resume the race with 11 dogs.
