Biden highlights grain silos near the Ukrainian border; Kyiv wants ports open
- Grain exports have halted and more than 20 million tonnes are stranded in silos since the Russian invasion and blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports.
- Grain could be transferred from Ukrainian railroad carriages into the new silos, and then onto European freight cars.
- “According to Ukraine, shipping across the Black Sea are the most effective approach to restart grain exports.
In an effort to facilitate grain exports and alleviate the escalating global food crisis, U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday that temporary silos will be constructed along the border with Ukraine.
Grain exports have halted and more than 20 million tonnes are stranded in silos since the Russian invasion and blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports. According to Ukraine, there are not enough silos for a new harvest. Prices for grains, cooking oils, fuel, and fertiliser are rising as a result of the war.
Nearly a third of the world’s wheat supplies come from Russia and Ukraine. Russia is a significant fertiliser exporter, and Ukraine is a significant exporter of grain and sunflower oil.
Biden told a union gathering in Philadelphia, “I’m working hard with our European colleagues to get 20 million tonnes of grain held in Ukraine out onto the market to assist bring down food prices.” It won’t be able to cross the Black Sea without being blown out of the water.
Ukraine and Russia have been laying maritime mines since the conflict began. Approximately 84 foreign ships, many of which are carrying grain supplies, are stranded in Ukrainian ports.
The grain would need to be moved to different trains at the border because Ukrainian track gauges are different from those in Europe, according to Biden, who highlighted that Washington was working on a strategy to send grain out by rail.
So, according to Biden, “we’re going to construct silos, temporary silos, on the borders of Ukraine, including in Poland.”
In order to “get it out to the ocean and get it across the world,” he added, adding that the idea would take time. Grain could be transferred from Ukrainian railroad carriages into the new silos, and then onto European freight cars.
“This is but one of the possible actions that could help to guarantee food security. However, our ports also require a green corridor “Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, stated in an online article.
According to the agriculture ministry of Ukraine, temporary silos could be provided by European nations to “preserve the harvest and safeguard future grain supply.”
According to Ukraine, shipping across the Black Sea are the most effective approach to restart grain exports.
In order to restart Russian food and fertilizer exports, which Moscow claims were affected by sanctions, and Ukrainian Black Sea exports, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is attempting to arrange what he terms a “package agreement.” As of yet, the U.N. has called the negotiations with Russia “productive.”
