Prior to the Council’s upcoming meeting in Brussels on June 23–24, 2022, President of the European Council Charles Michel published an invitation letter to the Council members that Michel feels might be extremely important for Ukraine’s European integration. The correspondence was made public on the Council’s website.

“With war back in Europe, we have taken unprecedented action, projecting the EU’s  geopolitical clout. We now need to take further steps to strengthen our continent’s security and stability. This will be the main focus of our European Council meeting on 23-24 June. Now is the time to acknowledge that the future of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia lies within the EU. I will invite you to grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. In parallel, we will continue to provide Ukraine with strong humanitarian, military, economic and financial support,” the letter reads.

Charles Michel, President of the European Council, published an invitation letter to the Council members prior to the upcoming Council meeting, which will take place in Brussels on June 23–24, 2022. Michel believes this invitation letter could be crucial for Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.

The correspondence was posted online by the Council.

“The consequences of the war are being felt far beyond our region. Russia is weaponising food supplies, stealing grain, blocking ports and turning Ukrainian farmlands into battlefields. This affects many countries, especially in Africa, risking famine and political and social instability. Building on our efforts to help Ukraine export its grain, we will discuss further measures to tackle these issues,” the letter reads.

Michel remarked that the Conference on the Future of Europe included citizens of Europe and presented recommendations aimed at enhancing the efficiency of our Union. The Presidents of the European Central Bank and the Euro group must participate in a thorough discussion of the current situation during the Euro Summit.

As was previously mentioned, the European Commission voiced its position on the EU membership applications of Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia on June 17. The opinion, which will be discussed by the European Council on June 23–24, claims that Ukraine and Moldova have received recommendations for candidate status as well as a number of tasks that still need to be completed.
