ANKARA:
According to local media, Australia’s Cabinet will have two Muslim ministers for the first time in the country’s history.
SBS News reported that Muslim members of parliament Anne Aly and Ed Husic were sworn into the Cabinet on Wednesday.
Husic will be in charge of industry and science, while Aly will be in charge of early childhood education and youth.
Husic is the son of a Bosnian Muslim immigrant, whereas Aly was born in Egypt and moved to the United States when she was two years old with her parents.
Ten women are among the 23 members of the Cabinet, which is a new high.
The ceremony took place 11 days after new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led the center-left Labor Party to victory in the federal elections on May 21.
Albanese’s historic decision to appoint Muslim MPs to his Cabinet was applauded by the Australian Muslim Advocacy Network.
“This is a day we never thought we’d see, and it’s so inspiring – so wonderful and excellent for democracy to have that variety in parliament,” Rita Jabri Markwell, the Australian Muslim Advocacy Network’s head, told SBS.
“It will bring people closer to politics and democracy, and it will make people feel more involved in the conversation,” she continued.
