Giving Ukraine the status of candidate for membership in the EU is a vital step for both the EU and Ukraine, as well as for peace and democracy on the continent of Europe as a whole. The European Union will start making arrangements for Ukraine’s enlargement right away.

In a joint video message, the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell made this declaration,

The European Council made a historic decision today as war loomed over Europe. It is awarding Ukraine candidacy for the EU. We, the European Union, as well as Ukraine, and the peace and democracy on our common continent are all at stake at this time, the foreign ministers declared.

According to Kuleba and Borrel, Russian aggression would not be able to deny Europeans their right to a normal, respectable life. Europe will triumph, and Ukraine will win.

“Today marks the beginning of a long journey that we will walk together. We will immediately launch the preparation for the integration of Ukraine into European structures and, ultimately, membership in the European Union,” they said.

The EU’s historic decision, according to the EU’s High Representative and the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, conveyed a clear message that the European Union is Ukraine’s future partner and that Ukrainians are members of the European family.

“Ukraine and the EU stand together for peace,” Kuleba and Borrell summed up.

The decision to grant Ukraine the EU candidate status was earned on the Maidans, in the front, and in the offices where conversations were held, experts were heard, and laws were changed, the top diplomat for Ukraine stated.

“Now it is enshrined on paper and carved in stone,” Kuleba concluded.

As was previously mentioned, the European Union’s Heads of State and Government decided to grant Ukraine the status of an EU candidate on Thursday night.
