NEW DELHI: 22 people were killed and eight others were injured on Tuesday in the eastern Indian state of Bihar due to lightning and rain-related occurrences, according to reports on Wednesday.
In the past twenty-four hours, the state has been pummelling by heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.
The majority of the victims, according to officials, were farmers working in the fields when the lightning struck.
The meteorological agency predicts severe rainfall and lightning in several sections of the state in the next twenty-four hours.
Nitish Kumar, chief minister of Bihar, has pledged financial aid for the victims’ relatives.
A representative for the local government stated, “The Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia payment of INR 400,000 (5,070 U.S. dollars) to the next of kin of the deceased.”
Kumar has also told people to pay attention during bad weather and follow the advice of the department of emergency management. “Stay at home in bad weather, stay safe,” Kumar advised.
In the state last week, 17 individuals were killed by lightning strikes.
