After the EU executive proposed that Kyiv be given the status of a candidate to join the bloc, the leader of NATO stated on Sunday that the war in Ukraine may take years and that Ukrainian forces were facing increased Russian assaults.

The German tabloid Bild am Sonntag cited NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg as saying that arming Ukrainian forces with cutting-edge weapons would boost the likelihood of releasing the eastern Donbas from Russian control.

“We need to be ready for the possibility that it will take years. We must continue to assist Ukraine “said he. Even though the costs are high due to growing energy and food prices in addition to the high cost of supporting the military.

Similar remarks about the need to get ready for a protracted battle were made by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who visited Kyiv on Friday.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, he emphasised the need to avoid “Ukraine fatigue” and for friends to show the Ukrainians they were there to back them for a long time while Russian forces “grind forward inch by inch.”

This entails making sure “Ukraine receives weapons, equipment, ammunition, and training more quickly than the invader,” he said in the opinion piece.

Time is a crucial component, according to Johnson. Everything will depend on whether Ukraine can improve its capacity to defend its territory more quickly than Russia can upgrade its offensive capacity.

The European Commission’s Friday recommendation that Ukraine be given EU candidate status gave it a big boost. The European Union’s member states are anticipated to support this recommendation at a summit this week.
