Russian journalist and prominent opposition figure’s attorney both posted on their social media profiles that prominent opposition lawmaker Ilya Yashin had been arrested in Moscow

Yashin was detained while the two were walking together, according to Irina Babloyan, a journalist and anchor at the now-defunct Ekho Moskvy radio station.

Ilya Yashin and I were strolling through the park when the cops arrived and arrested Ilya, Babloyan wrote on the Telegram chat service.

Additionally, Yashin was in police detention, according to attorney Vadim Prokhorov, who has defended numerous Russian opposition figures. This is because of an alleged administrative infraction involving defying a police officer.

“I’m not allowed to visit the (Moscow) Luzhniki Police Department to (see) the detained Ilya Yashin,” he said on his Facebook page.

The imprisonment was not formally confirmed by Russian officials.

The most recent incident in a larger, ongoing campaign against Kremlin critics is Yashin’s arrest. The most prominent Kremlin critic to be imprisoned is opposition lawmaker Alexei Navalny, who is currently serving an 11-1/2 year sentence. Numerous protests have taken place in dozens of Russian cities since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, and thousands of people have been jailed.

Yashin, a municipal depute for the Krasnoselsky neighbourhood of Moscow, has been a vocal opponent of the conflict, which the Kremlin refers to as a “special military operation.”

“I am staying in Russia,” Yashin tweeted on March 7. “I have said before and I keep repeating: Russians and Ukrainians should not be killing each other. If I am destined to end up in prison for anti-war speeches, I will accept it with dignity.”
