After carefully followed primary election campaigns against two rivals backed by former President Donald Trump, Republican U.S. Representatives Tom Rice and Nancy Mace awaited Tuesday to hear their political futures in South Carolina.

After Trump’s supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, as Congress sought to certify the 2020 presidential election, Rice, a five-term incumbent, and Mace, a freshman, both came into conflict with the president. A bipartisan committee investigation into the incident this week concentrated on Trump’s unfounded allegations of a rigged 2020 election.

According to Edison Research, with approximately a quarter of the votes recorded, Rice, one of 10 House Republicans who support Trump’s impeachment, was down 46 percent to 27 percent to Trump’s supporter Russell Fry.

The outcomes will be viewed as a gauge of Trump’s sustained sway over the Republican Party as he makes hints at a 2024 presidential run. His supporters have so far enjoyed varying degrees of success in key states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina.
