In reference to Russia’s actions in Ukraine and China’s cooperation with Russia, the president of South Korea warned a NATO summit of the threat to universal principles in a period of new conflict and competition, a South Korean official said.
President Yoon Suk-yeol joined national NATO leaders as an observer at a summit in Spain as Russian forces stepped up their attacks in Ukraine, making him the first South Korean leader to do so.
According to a South Korean official, Yoon stated in a speech on Wednesday that “a new structure of contests and disputes is taking shape, and there is also a movement that opposes the universal principles that we have been preserving.”
The official quoted Yoon as stating in his address that was not made public that the world community was confronting complex security problems that a single country could not resolve, though he did not specifically name Russia or China.
The official, who wished to remain unnamed, said on Thursday that “he was alluding to the Ukraine war and, like most other participating countries did, he highlighted concern about Russia’s involvement for the war and China’s responsibility in the world community.”
A strong ally of the United States, South Korea is home to 28,000 American soldiers. Additionally, it has grown a vital economic connection with China, South Korea’s top trading partner.
Like his predecessors, Yoon will have to strike a balance between these two alliances while also dealing with a hostile North Korea building up its stockpile of nuclear bombs and the missiles to deliver them.
According to South Korean authorities before to the summit, Yoon seeks to strengthen ties with NATO members while promoting international collaboration on North Korea’s nuclear aspirations.
The official stated that Yoon praised the alliance’s new focus on the Indo-Pacific, which is where South Korea is approaching NATO .
