While jubilee fever may appear to be widespread, many individuals in the United Kingdom; and its former colonies will not be celebrating. On Thursday morning, #AbolishtheMonarchy was trending on British Twitter, endorsed by the anti-royal campaign group Republic.

However, it isn’t simply passionate anti-monarchists who have been left cold. According to a poll conducted by YouGov earlier this month; more over half of Britons (56%) said they would not be celebrating the jubilee, while only 14% said they would. Polls routinely show that the queen remains popular with almost three-quarters of Britons. However, according to a YouGov poll released this week, fewer than two-thirds want to maintain the monarchy, with more than one-fifth wanting to replace it with an elected head of state.
