The amended proposal of Shell to develop a North Sea natural gas field was authorized by Britain’s regulator on Wednesday, as the government strives to enhance domestic energy supply following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Shell said it wants to proceed with the development of the Jackdaw gas field, which has the potential to provide 6.5 percent of Britain’s gas supply, in a statement.

After being denied on environmental grounds in October, British Business Minister Kwasi Kwarteng announced that the Jackdaw gas field had won final regulatory permission.

“Let’s source more of the gas we need from British waters to protect energy security,” Kwarteng said on Twitter.

According to Reuters, the UK’s Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning is set to accept the field’s updated environmental development plans, which would be a key step forward for new development.

Shell expects to begin production from the field in the second half of 2025 under the new plan.
