HISTORY
The International Day in Support of Torture Victims raises awareness that torture is immoral and a crime. The UNGA declared June 26 International Day in Support of Torture Victims on December 12, 1997.
The UN wants to end torture worldwide. The treaty against torture and other cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment went into force on June 26, 1987, hence the UN selected this day to honour torture victims.
