United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture 2022

United Nations International Day in Support of Physical or psychological torture affects countless individuals worldwide. Many incidences of international crime go undetected. To encourage all stakeholders to unite for abuse and torture victims, June 26 is marked as the International Day in Support of Torture Victims. The UN says torture may cause a cycle of violence that affects future generations.

HISTORY
The International Day in Support of Torture Victims raises awareness that torture is immoral and a crime. The UNGA declared June 26 International Day in Support of Torture Victims on December 12, 1997.

The UN wants to end torture worldwide. The treaty against torture and other cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment went into force on June 26, 1987, hence the UN selected this day to honour torture victims.

Celebrating the first International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26, 1998, the UN appealed to all the governments, stakeholders, and the members of the global society to stand against this act, and to take action against the torture and those who execute it in every corner of the world. The day is extremely significant, as it unites all in support of those who have been the victims of mental and physical torture.
