Yael Braun-Pivet elected new speaker of French National Assembly – Google
PARIS: Yael Braun-Pivet was elected as the new speaker of the French National Assembly, the country’s lower chamber of parliament, on Tuesday.
French media say that the 577 people who make up the French National Assembly started their first meeting on Tuesday by electing their first female speaker with 242 out of 462 votes.
The ensemble is the alliance of French President Emmanuel Macron. Braun-Pivet is a member.
As per reports, after Macron’s re-election in April, Braun-Pivet was appointed as minister of France’s overseas territories.
During this inaugural session, the deputies sat alphabetically rather than by political party.
Braun-Pivet said that the National Assembly should be a “base for consensus and compromise” in her speech after she was elected.
After the president, the prime minister, and the speaker of the Senate, the position of National Assembly speaker ranks fourth in the French government.
One of the chief responsibilities of the speaker of the National Assembly is to oversee the observance of the rules during discussions.
