On July 1 and 2, 1917, during World War I, the Russian and Austro-Hungarian armies engaged in the Battle of Zboriv. The units of the Czechoslovak Legion, made up of captured Czechs and Slovaks, participated in this fight for the first time on the side of the Russian Empire. The Russian forces prevailed in the engagement, effectively giving them their one and only significant victory during the so-called June assault. The triumph at Zboriv also helped raise Czech nationalism’s level of self-awareness.
