Before being apprehended in Costa Rica, the Texas yoga instructor suspected of killing a professional cyclist in a jealous rage “was trying to establish herself,” officials said on Wednesday. They listed multiple steps the fugitive took to change her appearance and fit in.

After 43 days on the run, Kaitlin Armstrong, 34, was apprehended by US Marshals at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in Provincia de Puntarenas for the alleged murder of 25-year-old cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson, who once had a love relationship with Armstrong’s boyfriend.

Deputy US Marshal Brandon Filla told KXAN that Armstrong had supposedly changed her look, was attending yoga classes frequently to improve her teaching skills, and was residing at a hostel to stretch her money and meet new people who spoke English.

On May 18, a day after Austin police issued a warrant for her arrest, the alleged killer used a fake passport to fly into Costa Rica from Newark Airport and settled into the oceanfront hostel.

Armstrong had long red hair when he first moved to the new country, but he trimmed it to shoulder length and gave it a dark brown dye job. She reportedly had “bruising under the eyes” as a result of an alleged surfboard incident, according to Filla, and a bandage on her nose.

He said, “That physical appearance changed a little. If she had started to lay that foundation for herself there in Costa Rica, would it have altered more? perhaps could have

Armstrong attended numerous yoga sessions, possibly “to strengthen her vocation to teach a specific sort of yoga” that featured surfing, according to Filla.

He continued, “We think she was staying at the hostel to really stretch her money further down the road.

Since she had to cut ties with her family and friends, Filla speculated that she may have decided to stay at a hostel because solitary travellers sometimes frequent the dormitory-style lodging to network with one another.

She was attempting to establish herself “with those types of resources limited,” according to the US marshal. Being in that hostel is really intended for independent travellers. You are aware that they make an effort to develop relationships with residents of their dormitories.

Armstrong made every effort to hide herself and lead a different life, but she was unable to get away with the alleged crimes.

US Marshals located the alleged murderer and detained her with the help of Homeland Security Investigations, the Department of State Diplomatic Security Service, and local law enforcement.

She will be sent back to the US to stand trial for Wilson’s murder on May 11.

The Wilson family, who has been harmed by this occurrence, can perhaps find some closure now that she will stand trial, Filla said.

Officials claimed that Armstrong’s live-in partner, 34-year-old Colin Strickland, had an affair with Wilson and sneaked out to meet her on the day of the shooting when she was travelling to Austin from San Francisco for a race that day in Waco.

Wilson was dropped off at a friend’s house, where she was discovered shot to death. Outside, a Jeep that appeared to be Armstrong’s could be seen on surveillance footage.

Before Armstrong fled, police questioned her but released her without filing any charges, according to officials.
