Jayland Walker, a Black man in Ohio, was shot numerous times by police as he ran from them after a traffic check, according to the family’s attorney, who cited an analysis of police body-worn camera footage that will be made public on Sunday.

Attorney Bobby DiCello said in comments released on Saturday by the Akron Beacon Journal that Walker’s family was concerned that protests this weekend would become violent and called the video “brutal.”

The shooting was the most recent in a string of Black males who were killed by law enforcement in the US that opponents claim were unjustified, including the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020 that sparked widespread protests against racial injustice and police brutality.

The family doesn’t need any more violence, DiCello said, adding that everyone was preparing for the community’s reaction.

According to Akron police, Walker, 25, fired a revolver at the pursuing policemen. They intend to make their body camera footage public at a press conference on Sunday, a few hours before a planned protest march.

Rodderick Pounds Sr., pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Akron, who was given access to the video before it was made public, stated during a prayer gathering there on Saturday, “Protest is a way of crying.”

The pastor compared Walker’s shooting down to a “massacre,” but Pounds declined to go into detail about “the terrible film the world is about to see.” Instead, he termed the clip “shocking” and claimed it proved Walker posed no threat.

In an interview with local television station WEWS-TV, Pounds stated, “It’s horrible.” You’ll find out tomorrow.

Officials have stated that the deadly altercation started when officers attempted to pull over Walker early on Monday morning for a traffic infraction. The Akron Police Department claimed that Walker ran after its officers heard gunfire coming from his car.

After some time, Walker got out of his car and fled as police pursued him on foot and opened fire, claiming he posed a “deadly threat,” according to a statement released by the police department on Tuesday.

Walker fell in a parking lot and was pronounced dead there. Requests for comment on Saturday were not immediately answered by police officials.

The police body camera film showed Walker running with his back to officers when they opened fire on him, according to DiCello, who also claimed that his team has not found any proof that Walker fired a weapon.

DiCello told the Beacon Journal, “He is just in a down sprint when he is dropped by I guess the total is over 90 shots. According to our current study, it appears that 60 to 80 wounds were sustained by those who made it to shore.

Walker was hit by an unknown number of gunshots since, according to DiCello, bullets can leave the body as well as enter it.

According to a preliminary assessment from the medical examiner’s office, Walker had several gunshot wounds to his head, body, and legs. Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation also reported that a weapon had been found in a car, however it did not specify whose car it was found in.
