Dramatic video shows the gunman being brought to the ground after killing Shinzo Abe, the former prime minister of Japan, twice with a homemade weapon.

The 67-year-old former politician was shot while giving a lecture in Nara, a city in western Japan, and was later declared dead.

A video shows Abe’s security crew tackling the alleged murderer, identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old military veteran.

According to Fuji TV, the suspect served in the Maritime Self-Defence Force for three years, from 2003 to 2005.

He is suspected of using a handmade weapon to shoot Abe to death.

The pistol appears to have two pipes attached to a piece of wood by thick black tape when viewed up close.

Abe may be heard speaking on the video before two audible bangs.

While scurrying on the ground, the person behind the camera captures the chaos but is able to return to the tape to focus.

It then shows the alleged gunman being tackled by three security guards while holding what appears to be a handmade gun.

One of the men in a black suit and a face mask pins down the alleged shooter after he is brought down.

Before there are two audible bangs, Abe can be heard speaking on the video.

The person behind the camera runs around on the ground, capturing the commotion, but is able to return to the tape and focus.

The subsequent scene depicts the alleged shooter being tackled by three security personnel while brandishing what looks to be a homemade firearm.

The alleged gunman is dragged down and is then pinned down by one of the men in a black suit and a face mask.

At 5:03 PM local time, his death was announced (8.03am BST).

Before Sunday’s election for the upper chamber of parliament, Abe was giving a speech at a campaign rally when gunfire started to ring out.

Despite the presence of his security team, the shooter was able to draw his rifle and kill the former president at close range “without being examined.”
